We decided it would be fun to carve pumpkins with the kids, but 'fun' would not be the word to describe it. Chaotic would probably be a better description. We cleared the table and chairs out of the breakfast nook and spread plastic on the floor. The kids suited up in their smocks and we set them down on the floor, each with a pumpkin. Reece wanted nothing to do with his pumpkin and just wanted to explore the kitchen, which is usually off-limits. So he spent the whole time crawling around the island and banging on the sliding door. Kate scooted around on her belly, doing her army crawling and getting into everything. She kept knocking the bowl with all of the pumpkin innards over and trying to eat it. We kept having to pull long strings of pumpkin out of her throat. Chase sat chewing on the top of his pumpkin and enjoyed sucking all of the juices out of it. Meanwhile, Daisy (one of the dogs) was as obsessed with the pumpkin guts as Kate was and kept stealing some and eating it. I'd say she probably ate a whole pumpkin's worth of innards. So, can you picture the chaos? Jacob and I trying to corral Reece, keep Kate and Daisy from eating all of the pumpkin pulp, all while trying to carve three pumpkins. Needless to say, our pumpkins didn't turn out to be any kind of masterpieces. In fact, they were pretty lame, but at least we survived our first family pumpkin carving session!
